Prepare your Home for the Freeze!!

What’s worse than a major home maintenance disaster? How about several major home maintenance disasters at once? For the quarter-million families who have their homes ruined and their lives disrupted each winter because of frozen water pipes, frigid nights can very quickly turn to ongoing, inconvenient, extremely expensive ordeals.

In cold and warmer climates alike, pipes freeze for a combination of three central reasons: quick drops in temperature, poor insulation, and thermostats set too low. Both plastic and copper pipes can burst when they freeze, and recovering from frozen pipes is not as simple as calling a plumber. A 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day, causing flooding, serious structural damage, and the immediate potential for mold.

In the United States, frozen pipes cause a huge amount of damage each year; unlike natural disasters, this disaster is largely preventable. By taking a few simple precautions, you can help save yourself the mess, money, and aggravation frozen pipes cause.

Your Best Bet: Don’t Let It Happen
There are a number of preventative steps you can take to keep your pipes from freezing. Here are a few simple tips provided by State Farm:

Before The Cold
Remember the three central causes of frozen pipes? Quick drops in temperature, poor insulation, and thermostats set too low. You can prepare by protecting your home during the warmer months. Here’s how:

•Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic, even if you live in a climate where freezing is uncommon. Exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Remember: The more insulation you use, the better protected your pipes will be.
•Heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and only for the use intended (exterior or interior). Closely follow all manufacturers' installation and operation instructions.
•Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. With severe cold, even a tiny opening can let in enough cold air to cause a pipe to freeze.
•Before winter hits, disconnect garden hoses and, if possible, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.
When The Mercury Drops
Even if you’ve taken the right preventative steps, extreme weather conditions can still harm your pipes. Here are a few more steps you can take:

•A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall.
•Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night. You might be in the habit of turning down the heat when you’re asleep, but further drops in the temperature – more common overnight – could catch you off guard and freeze your pipes.
•Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
Before You Leave
Travelling in the winter months might be good for the soul, but don’t forget to think about your pipes before you leave. What can you do?

•Set the thermostat in your house no lower than 55°F (12°C).
•Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it's warm enough to prevent freezing.
•Shut off and drain the water system. Be aware that if you have a fire protection sprinkler system in your house, it may be deactivated when you shut off the water.
If Your Pipes Do Freeze
What do you do if your pipes still freeze, despite your best preventative measures? First step: Don’t panic. Just because they’re frozen doesn’t mean they’ve already burst. Here’s what you can do:

•If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.
•Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water: You could be electrocuted.
•Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it could cause a fire hazard. Water damage is preferable to burning down your house!
•You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe with the warm air from a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.
•If your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house; leave the water faucets turned on. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it.

Why You Should Have Your Carpets Cleaned for the Holidays

With all of the shopping, baking, cleaning and planning you’re doing for the holidays, having your carpet floors cleaned may seem like just one more thing you’d rather not have to worry about. However, getting your carpets cleaned now in preparation for the holidays can do more than simply make your home look more presentable to guests.
Here are three reasons to have your carpets cleaned for the holidays:
1. Stain prevention. With more traffic — and more food being consumed — in your home this season, the chance of spills increases dramatically. The dirtier your carpeted floors are, the harder it will be clean up spills when they occur — especially as sticky substances can adhere to the dirt embedded in your Portland carpets. Getting your carpets washed now gives you a clean slate for cleaning up any party fouls during the holidays.
2. Odor removal. It’s easy to become accustomed to the odors that linger within your carpet floors. For your guests, it’s a different story. After going through all the trouble of preparing a big meal, the last thing you need is for the aroma of your food to have to compete with the musty smells or pet odors wafting from your carpets. Consulting with a Carpet Technologies cleaning services about odor removal can prevent your home’s smells from sneaking up on you at an inopportune time.
3. Sanitation. If you’re like most families with kids, opening gifts on Christmas probably involves some amount of floor sitting — and possibly crawling on hands and knees under the tree. Plus, if you’ll be entertaining guests with small children, those little ones will probably be crawling around on your carpet floors, as well. Do we need to say more?
Regular cleaning is an important step in extending the life of your carpets, and it makes sense to schedule it before the holidays. If you’re planning on entertaining this season, it’s a good idea to hire a Professional carpet cleaning service company like Carpet Technologies.

The Cause and Repair of Carpet Ripples, Buckles & Wrinkles in Nashville TN and Franklin TN

Wrinkles, ripples and buckles in carpet are most often caused by a failure to stretch the carpet correctly using a power stretcher, the use of an incorrect or failed cushion, or excessive temperature and/or humidity. Ripples can be caused by a combination of any of the above. If ripples or buckles develop, consult Carpet Technologies cleaning & repair. Generally, the problem can be corrected by a qualified repair and installation expert.
What causes carpets to ripple or buckle:
  • Poor installation: The carpet may have been improperly installed. In most cases of a bad installation the installer didn't use a power stretcher properly or at all.
  • Excessive wear due to traffic: Sometimes a carpet will need to be re-stretched because of wheelchairs, walkers, tricycles, etc. Even when installed to perfection it can become loose from excessive wear.
  • Sliding heavy furniture: Carpet is made of layers of fabric. When heavy furniture slides across the carpet it's likely that it will cause rippling.
  • Latex: if the latex holding the backing together deteriorates its called delamination, the carpet essentially loses its grip on itself, resulting in buckling and loss of fiber.
  • Improper padding for carpet type. Certain pile types require specific padding types; if these are paired improperly, the right amount of grip and support may not be present, resulting in carpet buckles. Make sure you consult a trained professional or manufacturer's guide when purchasing carpet so you get the right padding to accompany it.
If your Carpet is Rippling:
If you have carpet that looks more like the ocean than a flat carpet, you may have a problem. As soon as it begins to loosen up and become rippled, it wears faster. The bigger the ripples, the faster the ripples grow. This is because carpet is designed to lay flat and not move at all. When you walk on carpet ripples it causes the carpet to move up and down, further loosening it.
If your carpet is loose it's time to take action. In most cases, carpet stretching can fix the ripples and buckles, and there's no need to waste money replacing the carpet because of how it lays.
Carpet stretching is a common type of carpet repair that essentially involves pulling the carpet up from around one or more edges of the room, re-stretching it to proper tightness, cutting the carpet to the proper length, tacking back down into place and finally tucking it in along the edge.
Like any type of carpet repair, stretching carpet is more involved than it seems to be. Stretching carpet isn't just a matter of smoothing out ripples and re-securing, or pulling at the edges by hand as you would a bed sheet. Carpet stretching comes with its own tools and techniques that help you do the job right.
Re-stretching with a power stretcher is the remedy for buckles or wavy carpets. It can add years of life to your carpeting. Re-stretching will not reverse damage or excessive wear caused by improper installation, but works to prevent further unnecessary damage and wear.

Commercial carpet cleaning, serving Nashville TN , Brentwood TN , Franklin TN & surrounding areas.

Commercial carpet cleaning, serving Nashville TN , Brentwood TN , Franklin TN & surrounding areas.

On a daily basis your carpet, furniture, and hard surface flooring encounter dust, dirt, and allergens. We consider all of these factors when performing an initial inspection and analysis of your work environment. And to help you maintain a clean and healthy business we’ll recommend a customized cleaning and maintenance program that’ll keep it looking its best.
Maintenance Plan and Schedule – the five elements
A customized comprehensive carpet care program consists of five elements:
1. Soil Containment – isolation of soil entering the building using mats at
entrances.
2. Vacuuming – scheduled frequency for removal of dry soil.
3. Spot and Spill Removal System - using professional spot removal
techniques.
4. Interim Cleaning – scheduled frequency appearance cleaning for all
traffic areas.
5. Restorative Cleaning – scheduled frequency deep cleaning to remove
residues and trapped soils.
There are some conditions where appearance change must be expected. In areas where
the oily material from asphalt sealers is tracked into the building, carpet and other
flooring may become yellowed over time. Check the traffic lanes often for slight dulling
of color; this indicates a build up of soil. It is virtually impossible to remove all of this
material once it has penetrated the fiber of any carpet. Entrance mats and scheduled
cleaning can reduce this phenomenon. Areas where large amounts of sandy soil enter the
building may become dull in appearance over time. This is due to abrasion of the fiber
surface, affecting the reflection of light. Frequent vacuuming helps to minimize this
problem.
A thoughtfully designed and implemented maintenance program performed by qualified
personnel, properly equipped and trained, is essential for optimal long-term performance.
No matter how big or small the job, we have the experience and resources to deliver services that are second to none. From carpet cleaning to tile and grout cleaning, from water restoration services to partition cleaning, we are here 24/7 to meet your needs. Call Carpet Technologies today at 615-972-1441 to schedule a free inspection and comprehensive no-obligation quote.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

Purpose of Cleaning and Maintenance
Your commercial carpet installation is a significant investment, both in monetary terms
and overall facility image. It is important to implement a maintenance program from the
beginning. A consistent and effective carpet maintenance program can maintain the
initial facility image and dramatically extend the life of your monetary investment. It is
the goal of this publication to assist you in preserving the original appearance of your
commercial carpet.
There are many valuable reasons we clean or maintain any object, including carpet. The
incentive for an effective cleaning and maintenance program is magnified when we
recognize these activities contribute to the following:
􀂃 Allows for the healthy reuse of space and materials.
􀂃 Maintains the value of property and reduces the rate of depreciation.
􀂃 Contributes directly to personal security, comfort, and productivity.
􀂃 Accents aesthetics.
􀂃 Creates a unique psychology that enhances quality of life.
􀂃 Encourages topophilia (affection for place).
􀂃 Elevates a sense of well-being, which is the essence of good health.
􀂃 Sends caring messages and image.
􀂃 Promotes human dignity.

ô€‚ƒ Ensures sanitation – reduces adverse exposure levels.
􀂃 Serves as a form of insurance that reduces risk and prevents crisis.
The appearance of carpet depends upon several factors – color, pattern, density, fiber, and
a viable carpet maintenance program. In order to keep carpet products performing their
best, designing and implementing a comprehensive maintenance plan is very important.
Great care should be taken when choosing carpet colors, patterns, and textures. These
features combined with fiber quality and construction standards engineered to meet
performance requirements are important factors.

Room Makeover using Rugs

Room Makeover using Rugs

Many people look for ways to modernize their home without shelling out a great deal of money. A great way to do this is to use rugs. Just introducing a few rugs to your home will make it feel comfy and offer a new fresh look. There are some things that you need to be conscious of when you use rugs for redecorating. In addition to the things to consider is how significant color will be when using rugs in your decorating.
You will need to get large rugs that are decorative to help make a plain room look vibrant. If the room you intend to decorate is currently full of color then you should go the opposite direction. You should get a rug with neutral colors so that it is not going to compete with what you already have in the room If you move into a new place, it is possible to make your rug the main focus of your home and assemble the decorations for your home around the rug. Additionally when decorating with rugs, you should also be aware of the pattern. You should make certain the pattern of the rug matches with the furniture, accessories and wallpaper in your room. You need to be sure that the rug pattern and wallpaper or furniture do not clash alongside one another.

Yet another thing to think about when picking the design of your rug is the place it is going to end up in your home. For example, if you want a rug in your entry way, it ought to be a dark color with intricate patterns. The reason for this type of rug is the fact that many people will go out and in so you want something to hide all the dirt that comes in. For the dining room, you could use a light colored rug since it doesn’t have a lot of traffic. Maybe you would rather have a lighter rug in an area that has heavy traffic, but you need to be ready to have it professionally cleaned often.
You will find extra things to give some thought to when choosing rugs for the bath room. Either make sure that the hue of the rug complements the bathroom, or change everything in the bathroom to match your new rugs. Make sure that you get suitable bathroom rugs as they are often water resistant and mildew resistant.
Those were a handful of recommendations on how to decorate your home using rugs. When you are ready to buy a rug, make sure you understand how much you will shell out since rugs can get pricey. Don’t forget, this was a method to change the look of your house in an affordable way. Utilizing the information you’ve been given, get out there and have fun redesigning your home.

Staying Cool During the Summer Season!

As the summer season arrives in full force in the subcontinent, the best thing you can do to beat the heat is to stay hydrated.

Your body depends on water for survival.  After all, it makes up more than half of our body weight and every organ in the body needs water to function. Don’t wait for symptoms of dehydration like extreme thirst, dry mouth, and headache to act.
Heed the following tips to stay hydrated this summer season.
·         Don’t wait to get thirsty this summer. The fact is that by the time your mouth is dry, you’re well on your way to dehydration. As water is the best natural drink available, guzzle at least 2 liters a day.
·         Be sensible about the amount of water you drink. If you are exercising or going out in the hot sun you will need to drink more water.
·         Make drinking water a mindless habit. Let it be part of your early morning routine.  Keep a bottle within easy reach while you are relaxing in front of the television or working on the computer. Take regular sips even if you are not feeling thirsty. Drink a glass of water before every meal.
·         Eating water-based foods is a great way to supplement your water intake and stay hydrated. Eat fruits like watermelon and pineapple rather than drinking the juice. They are cooling and perfect for hot summer days. They have high water content and are rich in minerals.
·         Another perfect fruit for summer months is the apricot as it is good for fluid retention.
·         Honeydew melon, commonly known as muskmelon cools the body so gorge on it. The vitamin C and minerals present in these fruits are an added benefit.
·         Munch on cucumbers and tomatoes.  These foods have more than 90% of their weight in water content.
·         In summer we sweat more and lose essential minerals from our bodies. Cucumbers are a cool way to put the potassium back and they also contain ascorbic and caffeic acids, compounds that help us stay hydrated because of their moisture retaining properties.
·         Fresh citrus fruits such as orange, grapefruits, lemon and lime are excellent as they not only hydrate the body but also provide valuable nutrients.
·         Take a break from coffee this summer and sip the benefits of green tea. Enjoy it with lemon, as it will keep the body from retaining water. Herbal iced teas are also great thirst quenchers. Be adventurous and mix and match flavors.
·         Enjoy the miracle of tender coconut water. It hydrates perfectly as it has the exact proportion of electrolytes as human cells and plasma. It also contains a host of vitamins and minerals.

Consumer Reports tests carpet cleaning machines

Consumer Reports tests carpet cleaning machines

Just in time for spring cleaning, Consumer Reports tested eight carpet-cleaning machines from Bissell and Hoover. Prices ranged from $80 to $400. Testers also evaluated a rental machine. For comparison, they hired a professional service, too.

Testing carpet-cleaning machines is a dirty job. First, testers evenly spread a measured amount of topsoil over the carpet. Next, they spray it with water, and then use a heavy roller to press in the dirt, much like foot traffic does. Testers then vacuum the dried dirt and use a device called a colorimeter to measure the amount left on each rug.

Afterwards it is time to put the carpet-cleaning machines to work. Each one passes over the soiled area 20 times. Last step, the colorimeter measures the difference.
No home machines or rented ones did as good a job cleaning as the professional service. You can really see the difference when comparing the professional cleaning to the lowest scoring carpet cleaner, the $80 Bissell Quick Steamer 1770.

Nevertheless, Consumer Reports did find a carpet cleaner that delivered very good results. It's the Hoover Dual Steam Vac All Terrain with spin scrub brushes, model F7452-900. It costs $270. That's just a fraction of what you'd pay for professional cleaning jobs.

Consumer Reports also tested cleaning solutions and spot cleaners. For carpet-cleaning machines, if a cleaning solution is not specified, try the top-rated Fresh Solutions Allergen Complete cleaner. It costs about $17.

If you are just looking to do some spot cleaning, testers recommend the Bissell OxyPro Carpet Spot and Stain Remover that costs about $5.

Removing Odors From your Carpet

As the temperature rises in the south, so does the humidity levels. The moisture from humidity may cause many odor issues such as mildew odors, re activate pet urine salts in carpet or fabrics and many other sources.

Odor in homes and buildings arises from many sources that may include animal urine, disaster contaminates, moisture problems or just plain soil. Routine cleaning, using Certified Firms and Technicians automatically removes the sources of general soiling odors. Pet urine decontamination normally requires more specialized deodorizing techniques. To remove musty odor associated with moisture, ultimately it's important to identify and correct the moisture (high humidity) intrusion problem. Odor associated with disaster contaminates (smoke, trauma events) requires highly specialized procedures and techniques.

Odor removal involves four general principles:

1. removing the source as possible;
2. cleaning affected surfaces and materials;
3. recreating the conditions of penetration with appropriate counteractants, and
4. sealing restorable surfaces as necessary.

Carpet Technologies of Franklin TN and Nashville TN are certified professionals that are trained and experienced in dealing with carpet-related odor. They have the detection tools, the specialized agents, the equipment and the experienced necessary to deal with odors of all types and kinds.

HOW TO DEAL WITH INEVITABLE SPILLS ON YOUR CARPET…

We’ve all had it happen~
Whether it’s a dropped plate on the way to the dinner table, orange juice spilled at breakfast, those red wine spots from last nights impromptu gathering… accidents do happen, so try not to get too upset. Follow these guidelines, and you have a better chance of getting your carpets looking good again.

Act Immediately!  Today, most carpet available has been treated with a stain-resist treatment.  Many spills can be removed or considerably reduced if immediate action is taken. The longer the delay, the higher the probability of a spill becoming a permanent stain. Remember, staining is influenced by many factors, and no carpet is completely stain proof.
Dab liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white (no printing) paper towels. It’s important not to use printed or dyed towels for this, especially if you’ve got lighter colored carpets, transfer does happen! White terry cloth or microfiber towels are great to have on hand for this purpose.
Blot – Don’t Scrub the area! Scrubbing can cause pile distortion. Continue to use a white cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry. For semi-solids, gently scrape up with a spoon. Break up and vacuum solids away.
Googling stain treatments can be tempting, but remember that a carpet is a big investment~ in order to keep it looking great for longer, sometimes you just have to call a professional. Some home remedies and ‘tricks’ can actually set the spot, turning it into a permanent stain that can be expensive, or worse still, impossible to remove. Find a reputable Carpet Cleaner in your local area, and ask them for a free, no obligation quote. Better yet, if you’re in the Franklin TN or Nashville TN area, Call Carpet Technologies carpet cleaning, repair & restoration services of Franklin TN, we can take care of it for you! We’ll visit you on site for a free quote, and since all our technicians carry the tools of the trade on board, chances are we can take care of it straight away.

DIY SPOT CLEANING PROCEEDURE

DIY SPOT CLEANING PROCEEDURE

There is a right way and a wrong way to cleanup accidental spills on your carpet. What you should not do is just as important as what you should do. Today's new carpets resist spots much better than those manufactured even a few years ago. However, they are still susceptible to spots and should be treated quickly to avoid a permanent stain.  Carpet Technologies offers this free advice for your carpet cleaning and spotting needs.  Carpet Technologies Carpet Cleaning serves: Nashville TN, Brentwood TN, Franklin TN, Spring Hill TN and other surrounding areas.

STEP 1: Blot up as much of the spill as you can. Make sure you blot- don't scrub. Scrubbing will only work the spill deeper into the fiber and may leave a wear mark. Use a white paper or white cotton towel to blot. Fold the towel and press it into the spill. Rotate the towel often so a clean surface is always against the carpet. Continue to blot until no more of the spill transfers to the towel. Remove any solid material with a rounded spoon or the edge of a dull knife.

STEP 2: Cover the blotted area with a fresh white towel. Weight the towel with something that will not transfer color to the carpet or towel. Leave this in place for 15-20 minutes to remove any remaining spill. Should the carpet remain stained, go to step 3.

STEP 3: Spotting the remaining stain in your carpet requires care and patience. You cannot apply most household cleaners to the stain without further damaging the carpet. Many common cleaners contain dyes that will discolor the carpet or chemicals that will permanently set the stain. If you can locate the literature you received when you bought the carpet it should contain the spotting procedures for you to follow. All of Carpet Technologies client receives a free bottle of specially formulated spot remover,  or you can attempt to remove most common household spills with the following procedure. Mix a 1-2 drops of colorless, mild detergent in a cup of lukewarm water. To test the safety of the solution, apply several drops to an inconspicuous area (closet, under a sofa) and rub gently with a clean white towel. Do not proceed if the carpet color transfers to the towel or if the carpet color changes. Try an alternate cleaner or call a professional. If the test is successful, spot the stain by alternately applying a few drops of cleaner followed by blotting. Always blot, never scrub. Work from the outer edge of the stain to the center. Continue this process until the stain is gone or no more color transfers to the white towel. The final step is to gently rinse the area with clear water, then absorb all the remaining moisture with absorbent towels.

Should a stain persist, contact Carpet Technologies for assistance. We may be able to offer further advice by phone, or if necessary, we'll dispatch a technician with a complete spotting kit to remove the stain.
